Waqf Bill Sparks Govt-Opposition Clash | Budget Session Highlights
The recent Budget Session in India witnessed intense political drama as the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 triggered a heated standoff between the ruling government and the opposition. The bill, aimed at reforming the management of Waqf (Muslim charitable) properties, has been both hailed and criticized depending on the political viewpoint.
The government argues that the amendment is designed to increase transparency, curb corruption, and improve oversight by allowing non-Muslim members on Waqf boards and expanding regulatory powers. This, they say, will benefit the poor and prevent misuse of valuable religious assets.
On the other hand, opposition parties, especially the Indian National Congress, have fiercely objected, calling the bill "unconstitutional" and a threat to minority rights. They claim the legislation could be used to encroach on Muslim religious land and institutions. There were also accusations that the bill was pushed through hastily, violating parliamentary decorum.
The debate also spilled into related issues — from tariff bills to personal clashes, such as the row between Speaker Om Birla and Sonia Gandhi, which further deepened the political divide. Yet, despite the chaos, Parliament managed to maintain over 100% productivity, passing multiple bills during the session.
The Waqf bill controversy has not only sharpened the ideological rift between the government and opposition but also reignited discussions around minority rights and religious property control in India.
